Dr. Rüdiger Paschotta will discuss the design and performance issues of optical systems for these lasers and help manufacturers understand what kind of components with what kind of specifications are required for ultrafast laser systems in different markets. Direct diode lasers with both high spectral and high spatial brightness have been in development for several years and are now ready for commercialization, particularly in welding, cutting, and pumping applications. Direct diode lasers may also serve in defense applications such as infrared countermeasures, target designators, and directed energy weapons, and in free-space communications. Dr. Parviz Tayebati, president of Teradiode, will describe his company’s direct diode laser technology, first developed at MIT Lincoln Labs, and then the specific market opportunities he sees in the near and long term.
